I was expecting certain things from this novel: a smart-ass protagonist, contemporary cultural references, dark humor, and maybe some cheesy Life Lessons since it's about terminal illness.They usually look like a cluster of sausages, linked together at the top – this should be uppermost, positioned just below the surface of the compost. Ellroy viscerally presents the "Fire and Ice" boxing match between the two heroes, certainly the best boxing/fist fighting I have seen since the Spenser series by Robert B. Ellroy's mother was also murdered and I believe in interviews the author admits that this novel has all the more intensity, passion and obsession you might expect, as a result.
His novel American Tabloid was Time magazine’s Best Book (fiction) of 1995; his memoir, My Dark Places, was a Time Best Book of the Year and a New York Times Notable Book for 1996. It probably goes without saying, but I will place a warning here for any readers on the fence about the book. One line of enquiry leads Bucky to Madeleine Sprague, a spoiled socialite who closely resembles Short and was also a lesbian lover of hers. I finally realized why I grew these flowers, why I coveted each and every type and form, and why I wanted every color in every size and shape to add to my gardens and flower arrangements. Blooming late summer to the first frost of autumn, this native of Mexico provides explosions of color in home gardens.However, it’s her employment of deliberate repetition of words and phrases that is most effective—by the final paragraph, indeed the final two lines of the book, Dahlia/Albert’s penchant for repetition steps beyond the aesthetics of rhythm and structure and becomes something else altogether, something unexpectedly and emotionally crushing. Ellroy’s story is about detective Dwight "Bucky" Bleichert, and his partner, Lee Blanchard, who both are led to drugs and madness and criminal excess themselves in the process of investigating this crime. At Chambers' house, he sees a painting of a grotesque clown with a Glasgow smile, similar to Short's facial mutilations. Because we are talking here about death, and f*ck you if you don't like it: You're going to die, too. James Ellroy's own mother was raped and murdered a decade or so after Betty Short, when Ellroy was still a young boy. The fat Rurale standing sentry there licked his lips when he saw me coming--he reminded me of a child molester who would never retire. Erin and her team have splendidly illustrated the techniques for attaining and then arranging these bountiful blooms.
