What about eARC?
HEC, or HDMI Ethernet Channel, comes included with cables and chip processors HDMI standard 1.4 or higher. They allow for the transmission of internet data at high speeds with better bandwidth. If you are using WiFi, you can use HDMI with ethernet to get a better, faster, and more stable connection. This can simplify your setup and opens up new opportunities for home network management.
Since HDMI ARC and HEC use the same pins, any HDMI cable that is marked as “HDMI with Ethernet” or ARC will work. Ultimately, I wouldn’t worry too much about finding the perfect HDMI cable, most modern ones built within the last decade should work just fine. What about eARC? Since 2009, HDMI cables have builtin ethernet capabilities, but not many people are using HDMI cables to connect to the internet. There aren’t even many devices that support the internet over HDMI. Why is that? Is it more efficient than ethernet cables or is it a useless feature? Should you buy an HDMI cable with ethernet? They are often used in a few different ways, which we’ve explored before, but will briefly touch on again here. They communicate audio signals and control consumer elections.Compatibility: Make sure the HDMI over Ethernet extender you choose is compatible with your existing equipment, including your source device, display, and network infrastructure. After all, Ethernet-enabled HDMI cables allow audio, video, and network data transmissions from the primary source to IP-based smart media devices with zero compromises in quality. Though all of it seemed practical in marketing terms, only a handful of devices managed to put HEC to fair use, and not even the ones available domestically. Reasons why Ethernet over HDMI didn’t Take Off
Price: Finally, consider the cost of the extender and whether it fits within your budget. Keep in mind that higher-priced models may offer additional features or better performance. Power Supply: Most HDMI over Ethernet extenders require a power supply to function. It can either be a separate power supply or powered through a PoE injector. The idea of HEC was to connect one HDMI cable with ethernet from a modem or router to a TV and then all the devices that are connected to that TV via HDMI can also benefit from the internet connection (Gaming consoles, Bluray Players, etc). It would allow you to use one cable for all your connection needs (audiovisual and internet) instead of having to use separate connections. Why Didn’t Internet over HDMI Catch On?HDMI cables can deteriorate over time. If you're plugging and unplugging the cable consistently, it will wear down faster, and HDMI cables made of better materials last longer. Eventually, though, HDMI cables will become faulty. An HDMI cable will have a trapezoid-shaped connector on either end of the wire. This connector will have 16 tiny pins that will be used to transmit the digital signal to your TV or monitor. HDMI cables will have the same connector on both ends of the wire. Interestingly enough, HDMI Audio Return Channel, the feature most soundbars and television sets use for audio, uses the same pins as HEC. In some cases, these two are combined into one term – HEAC – but it’s not very common. In short, an HDMI cable that is labeled as High Speed or ARC compatible is also HEC compatible. These specs tie into the HDMI connection standards, which is why you might see some Category 3 cables listed as HDMI 2.0 cables and some Category 3 (8K) cables listed as HDMI 2.1. Basically, if you have a 4K console with an HDMI 2.0 output and a 4K HDR TV with an HDMI 2.0 input, then you’re going to need a Category 3 cable running between them, or you run the risk of only getting 4K at 30Hz.
Many of these pins are connected to twisting pairs of wires that are wrapped in a protective layer. These are called shielded twisted pairs. What HDMI with ethernet cables do is use wires that are usually designated as straight-through wires to be twisted pairs like the others. This allows for the internet data to be transmitted over these pairs. Enhanced Audio Return Channel (also known as eARC) is the next generation of ARC. It’s a feature implemented in the most recent HDMI 2.1 specification.
Reasons why Ethernet over HDMI didn’t Take Off
This means all those high bitrate formats currently available on Blu-ray discs, 4K Blu-rays and some streaming services – Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio and object-based formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X– will all be compatible. It’s also worth mentioning that an HDMI cable with Ethernet costs mostly the same as any other standard high-quality HDMI cable. The Concept Behind HDMI Ethernet Channel To extend HDMI over Ethernet, you will need an HDMI over Ethernet extender kit, Ethernet cables, and power supply. When it comes to choosing a right one, you need to consider the transmission distance, the maximum resolution/bandwidth, price, compatibility, etc. Yes, HDMI over Ethernet extenders require power to function. The transmitter and receiver units must be plugged into an electrical outlet or powered through PoE (Power over Ethernet) injector. Bandwidth: Another important factor to consider is the bandwidth requirements of your signal. Make sure the extender you choose can handle the necessary bandwidth to transmit your HDMI signal over Ethernet.
