About this deal

After mulling over it for several days, The Break seems slightly weaker to me in retrospect than it did while I was reading it. I nod. Hugh’s dad died eight months ago, and Hugh had shut down. ‘I thought that if enough time passed he’d be okay.’ The other thing is that I really wanted resolution with his parents and to some degree I wanted his name cleared as far as all that stuff in the hospital (not trying to do the spoiler thing, here). Feeling a little lost in life, Hannah Martin moves in with her best friend Gabby. At a bar, they meet Hannah’s old high school boyfriend, Ethan, and he joins them for drinks. At the end of the night, Hannah has a choice to make: go home with Gabby, or stay a little later and let Ethan take her home. Based on this decision, Hannah’s life will go one of two ways. The book proceeds to tell the story of Hannah’s life from both timelines, ultimately showing how different her life will turn out based on this one decision. The book is thus an exploration of the choices we make, the paths we take, and how to find true love in a world of never-ending possibilities.

The things I liked about this novel were the realism of the situation, the strong women, and the family unity that is shown as they come together to support these young women. The large cast of characters, however, kept me from connecting to any of them in particular. There was much dialogue, conversations that seemed excessive, in fact much of the book seemed to be made up of conversations between various family members. Sharing their stories and family situations. Unfortunately I didn't find much in them that I found interesting. My favorite character was the grandmother, they called her the kakoom, and she was the matriarch of the family. I appreciated her quiet wisdom.

Reviews

Sounds pretty dark, foreboding and like so many other post-apocalyptic tales, right? UM..NO…because Jorge Sanchez has a keen sense of humor that is both dry and as hilarious as survival against all odds by an average “Joe”named Jeremiah can be! accommodationResetWarningMessage":"Continuing will clear your basket. Would you still like to continue?", I bought this book and Invicible Summer at the same by Hannah but I wanted to read this one first. The concept really caught my attention. As someone whose broken a few too many bones in her lifetime...I know the pain that comes with it. I could never ever imagine doing it to myself on purpose, so I was intrigued. I'm glad Jonas didn't get through breaking all the bones he was planning on breaking. I don't know if I could've lived through reading that lol. The skateboarding 'accident' to him throwing himself into a 14 foot deep pool that had been drained to smashing 8 of his toes with a hammer...just imagining that while reading made me shutter.

This was the first book I've read of Hannah Moskowitz's and it did NOT disappoint. Break was an easy read and it also (rather rudely) enjoyed toying with my feelings.I just couldn't believe that Jonah would willingly remove himself from his home. It was clear that he believed his parents were incompetent, which set off Jesse's allergies constantly. Since Jesse is obviously so important to him, I just can't see him leaving without putting up a serious fight. However, the story doesn’t often step off the gas from its headlong blood-and-guts joke fest. As such, it didn’t often allow us moments to see its heroes in human moments. The plot was solidly constructed, and its settings interesting. The novel’s characters, though, were more archetypes than people, and the protagonist, Jeremiah Reid, felt like a bundle of inconsistencies.
