COMMON NAMES: Baby Hawaiian Woodrose, Bastantri, Elephant Creeper, Hawaiian Baby Woodrose, Holzrose, Jatapmasi, Marikkunni, Marututari, Mile-a-minute, Miniture Wood-rose, Monkey Rose, Samandar-ka-pat, Samudrasos, Silberkraut, Silver Morning Glory, Soh-ring-kang, Woodrose, Woolly Morning Glory TRADITIONAL USES: Hawaiian Baby Woodrose is a popular candidate for the mythological Soma plant of the Vedas. “Soma” is the liquid potion derived from the Soma plant, the earthly counterpart of Ambrosia, the ancient, mythical drink of immortality reserved for the gods. The name Soma was bestowed upon a deity (the moon; the god of plants), the plant itself and the sacrificial drink that was prepared from the plant. The botanical identity of soma has been lost, and theories abound as to which entheogenic plant it might have been (Ratsch 1998, 65). A pot that is too small also has less capacity for soil and therefore nutrients so sage can suffer from a nitrogen deficit. It has recently been discovered that shamans of the Kirati in Nepal use the seeds to ‘fly’, with one fruit capsule being the usual dose. Furthermore, the flowers of A. nervosa are used as offerings for the Nagas (Hofmann et al 2002).

Also sage is adapted to blazing sunshine in the Mediterranean so it does not grow well if it is shaded for most of the day. How to Revive Sage Plants that are not Growing those used medicinally (2-10mg compared to 0.2-1mg), it’s believed that ergonovine may have psychedelic properties.Woody and Amani became beloved after having one of the best love stories within the Married at First Sight franchise. They proved to be fully open and committed to the process of marrying a stranger. By amending the soil before transferring the sage to a pot you are essentially replicating the sandy soil conditions of the sage’s native environment which prevents root rot and keeps the plant healthy. If the sage is wilting and the leaves are turning yellow then you should transfer it to a pot with drainage holes and amend the soil with sand or grit to improve the drainage. Apricot Delight' – a perennial wallflower, this is a beautiful and floriferous, woody-stemmed small evergreen shrub. The apricot-orange flowers on tall spires, appear for months on end and is a magnet for bees and butterflies To learn more specifically about wilting sage plants and what to do, read my article on why sage plants wilt).

Unfortunately, one cannot simply plant an A. nervosa and expect to get seeds within a few months or even a year. In most parts of the world, it can take a second flowering, or two years to get your first batch of seeds from this exotic plant. In India, growing seasons are often accelerated, so one can often get seeds within 18 months, but for many that’s still an extraordinarily long time to wait. But, once this beautiful climber is growing in your garden, you will find yourself delighted by the mere presence of this graceful plant, and all the effort will be worth it once you get your first harvest of seeds.Until a new bud becomes dominant, or higher on the plant, a lot of energy is invested in a flush of growth to reestablish an apically dominant bud. For this reason, it can be incredibly important to establish one dominant stem, called the central leader, in young trees. Ratsch, Christian., The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants: Ethnopharmacology and its Applications. Rochester: Park Street Press, 1998.

If your garden soil has a high clay content or is perhaps boggy and low lying then it is not suitable for growing sage as clay retains moisture around the roots which promotes the conditions for root rot. In Hawaii, the baby woodrose has reportedly been used for thousands of years as a cheap alternative to cannabis and alcohol, as well as having some religious and spiritual significance. It’s believed that—almost uniquely among plant hallucinogens—the Hawaiian baby woodrose was not widely known as an entheogen until the 1960s, subsequent to research on related morning glories. With a garden fork, gently lift the sage plant out the ground if possible and inspect the roots. Snip off any infected roots that are soft, dark brown, slimy and infected and snip off any brown foliage. Sterilise the pruners after each cut (with a cloth soaked in alcohol disinfectant) to prevent the spread of fungal disease and burn any infected parts of the plant.

Cultural & traditional use of Hawaiian baby woodrose

Reign Randall is the latest precious addition to the MAFS family, and fans couldn’t be happier for Woody and Amani as their family grows. Sage is a drought tolerant plant the prefers the soil to dry out between bouts of watering, however it is an adaptable plant that can grow in many different climates with some adjustments.
