About this deal

Each teaching sequence is based around a core text, and follows a three part structure: Learning About the Text, Practising Writing and Independent Writing. It consists of samples of writing from Year 1 to Year 6, all of which have been assessed and annotated to show what the assessment criteria look like in children's writing. It also includes complete samples of childrens' writing assessed at Expected (EXS) and Greater Depth (GDS) for all year groups from Y1 to Y6. Additional guidance is provided on ‘post-its’ within the Pupil Book section for continuing professional development to make the most of the programme’s resources and activities. Avoid skipping parts of the Pupil Books on the basis that the learner may already know some of the featured letter/s-sound correspondences.

These materials include but are not limited to; five separate teacher books (one for each year group) and a USB stick containing editable versions of the materials. A flexible and easy to use resource that is designed to meet the needs of the 2014 National Curriculum and covers Years 2 to 6. Earlier texts tend to be more suitable for the beginning of the year while those towards the end of the lists are increasingly complex in either language or concepts, and therefore could be more appropriate towards the end of the year. The fact that it’s easy to follow and quick to resource makes this scheme both useable and great value for money. The NO NONSENSE SPELLING programme was devised to offer teachers a comprehensive yet accessible progression in the teaching of spelling. The team, made up of experienced KS1-2 teachers and advisers, saw great results in Devon and collaborated with Raintree Publishers to offer the programme to the whole country. In all cases, teachers need to make text choices based on the individual needs of their classes: almost all of these texts have been used successfully across two year groups in different contexts.

Debbie is also the author of the online DfE-validated Free Phonics International programme for all ages, the Wand Phonics (Wand Education) interactive, digital platform that can be used to complement both the No Nonsense Phonics and Phonics International programmes, and the self-study Phonics Training Online course. Children’s spelling is improving across the county, and Kent managed to equal National performance in the SPAG test in 2016 for the first time. This is because many schools have existing reading book schemes which introduce some letter/s – sound correspondences earlier than they are introduced in Debbie’s No Nonsense Phonics and Phonics International programmes.Additionally, we are adding to our new series of decodable ‘Phonics Reading Books’ which is an exciting development! This structured and rigorous approach offers teachers a comprehensive yet accessible progression in the teaching of spelling for Years 2-6. We're very sad to say that, as of the 15th of January 2023, Raintree will no longer be selling No Nonsense Literacy and that all subscriptions have been transferred to Devon County Council (formerly Babcock Learning and Development Partnership, the Devon English team and author of the resource).
