About this deal

Most monitors will have a range of different inputs available, and your PC or laptop will also use different outputs, so it can be difficult to decide which is the best connection to use. To understand the above chart in context, we need to go deeper. What all digital connections — DisplayPort, HDMI and even DVI-D — end up coming down to is the required bandwidth. Every pixel on your display has three components: red, green, and blue (RGB) — alternatively: luma, blue chroma difference, and red chroma difference (YCbCr/YPbPr) can be used. Whatever your GPU renders internally (typically 16-bit floating point RGBA, where A is the alpha/transparency information), that data gets converted into a signal for your display. HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. In modern home entertainment devices, such as flat-panel TVs and Blu-ray players, HDMI is the standard connection interface. As in the case of DVI, the signal is transmitted in digital format, which means maintaining the original quality. Together with HDMI, HDCP (High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) technology was developed to prevent the piracy and illegal copying of video materials. The first devices with HDMI support appeared in late 2003. Since then, the standard has been changed several times; in particular, support of new audio and video formats has been added. Precisely why did HDMI become so popular? A newer 1.3 and 1.4 version, that both have a maximum data rate of 25.92 Gbits/sec, are both becoming more widely available.
