Though Foster dies, she is rewarded as The Mighty Thor with entry into Valhalla. However, she enters the place of the gods in her mortal form. He can lose a body part, or use a cane when in a temporary human form, but neither puts him at risk of dying. In Love and Thunder, Foster takes on new enemies: cancer and the cosmic villain Gorr (Christian Bale). While Foster and Odinson vanquish Gorr, they are not able to defeat her cancer. Despite the likelihood of her death, Foster chooses to live, and die, on her own terms. She joins Odinson in the final battle against Gorr, dying as a result of the wounds she sustains and her cancer.

By choosing to make hard moral decisions and take risks, even that of losing him, Foster gives Odinson things to feel shitty about. In this state, Odinson now empathizes with Gorr to the point of taking on the care of his enemy’s orphaned daughter. In 2017 Taika Waititi directed Thor: Ragnarok, which still strikes me as the best MCU movie, and a few years before that the superb and franchise-igniting vampire romp What We Do in the Shadows: both comedy gold, and way better than his misjudged and overrated middlebrow Panzer-crash Nazi satire Jojo Rabbit. Now Waititi has directed, and co-written with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, an entertaining followup to his MCU masterpiece. Like the first film, it’s a tongue-in-cheek cosmic spectacular in the tradition of Mike Hodges’ Flash Gordon, with some nice gags, big cameos (though I missed some of the major characters from Thor: Ragnarok) and Chris Hemsworth returning to deliver his easygoing turn as the great flaxen-haired Norse god. And of all the Hollywood movie stars currently taking the MCU shilling, Hemsworth is the most utterly unembarrassed, most visibly enjoying himself, most utterly relaxed in his own skin and in front of his own greenscreen. We're finally getting Thor: Love and Thunder this week, featuring Natalie Portman's Jane Foster wielding Mjolnir as the Mighty Thor. But how can Jane be the new Thor, you mask ask? The answer lies in the film's Marvel Comics inspirations. The costs for Foster, however, are much higher. Foster’s superhuman power, ironically, prevents her cancer treatments from working. Being The Mighty Thor risks killing her. This is a film full of choppy shifts, both in the narrative and the visuals. In Thor: Love and Thunder, Foster’s cancer journey enables Odinson learn a lesson on meaning and risk. While she is in hospital, Odinson begs her to give up Mjolnir so that he won’t lose her. (AP Photo/Scott Garfitt) Love and loss The essential daftness of all that is happening is nicely embodied by Hemsworth, though the film now has a more solemn emphasis with Dr Foster’s cancer and the references to her chemotherapy. The film is probably on its strongest ground with the most purely absurd touches, such as the squabbling rivalry between the hammer Mjölnir and his new weapon, the axe Stormbreaker – which is always crowding into the frame suspiciously when Thor starts swoonily hanging out with Mjölnir, unable to accept that Mjölnir is with Dr Foster now. Thor himself has conquered his weight issues, and is now a fine figure of alpha-maledom who literally makes young goddesses faint in one scene after he is disrobed and his manhood (or rather godhood) is revealed to them. Not all of Mighty Thor's abilities were positive. Before Thor becomes unworthy, Jane is diagnosed with breast cancer. She refused to participate in any kind of magical treatment and instead took a chance with chemotherapy. Unfortunately for Jane, each time she transformed into Mighty Thor, there were adverse effects on her health. The hammer purged all toxins from her body during the transformation process, including the radiation treatment for her cancer. The helpful drugs were subsequently emitted, so Jane's condition worsened as cancer spread throughout her body. She eventually sought help from Doctor Strange, one of the few people who knew her true identity. He advised her to stop transforming into Mighty Thor as the next time could kill her.
The movie is effectively ruled by one cameo, the figure of Zeus, which it would be unsporting to reveal here: our A-list guest star unveils one of his strangest accents yet, but also gets serious laughs, as the upstart Thor deprives him of his lightning bolt. And yet it has to be said that, however adroitly Waititi plays it, Marvel’s comedy mode has become a bit of a reflex, a specific mode which could almost be enabled in the settings menu of Marvel software: a highly contained form of restricted self-satire or auto-undercutting that is always offset by the huge CGI intergalactic action scenes. This is becoming a bit of a cul de sac – but that isn’t to say it isn’t still funny, and Thor still delivers a mighty hammer-blow, or rather axe-blow, of fun. The movie runs up against idealizing narratives of cancer. Cultural critic Barbara Ehrenreich has criticized depictions of cancer as “ the source of [one’s] happiness.” Emaciated from chemotherapy, Foster becomes muscled (and blonde) as The Mighty Thor. The film and comic books link these different bodies through the ethical decisions she must make. In both earlier comic books and films, Foster’s typical role was as a minor character. Writers used her as the love interest in danger, giving the male hero someone to rescue.

From giant screaming goats to a love triangle between his axe (Stormbreaker) and his "ex-hammer" (Mjolnir), I was laughing throughout. This will absolutely be a deterrent for some viewers though. Marvel is known to have a lot of comedy sprinkled throughout their films, but this one probably takes the cake for the amount of humour. The humour landed for me about 90% of the time though, so I had an absolute blast. The film mostly avoids this. Cancer becomes the occasion for determining what’s important in life through struggle on behalf of others while facing death. In the new movie Thor: Love and Thunder, based on recent comic books about the superhero, cancer complicates what it means to be Thor.
