Sam did such a great job describing the midsole for the Sense Ride 3 ( RTR Review ), I feel inclined to copy his description below: The Salomon Sense Ride 4 is, without a doubt, the best and most versatile of the Sense Ride offerings to date. An accommodating and durable upper combined with a responsive, but not-too-firm midsole, and a do-everything outsole should appeal to every runner. The Salomon Sense Ride 4’s are everything you want in a trail shoe – they are incredibly stable, lightweight, breathable and work well on all different types of terrain. Perfect for summer trail runs or hikes in the mountains. I agree with you on the SR3, after running in them for the sake of reviewing, I never ran in them again. That said, it became my favorite shoe for just slipping on easily for a walk, a hike or errands, they are so comfortable and versatile for all things not running. The SR 4 however feels more like a running shoe to me, which seems surprising given the same midsole and outsole, but the changes in the upper and minor drop in weight are enough to get me running in them consistently beyond review duties. Of course I couldn’t steer you away from a Cascadia or Xodus 10 or Caldera 5.
Salomon Sense Ride 4 Review - Trail Running Shoes
The updated Sense Ride 4 is as comfy and responsive as the Sense Ride 3. The upper effortlessly optimizes your foothold, particularly around the heel, and features a resistant, anti-debris mesh for added protection. Very excited about the Sense Ride 4 – I owned 3 pairs of the previous model. Currently still on my first pair. However, I do intend to run an ultra in them, so I will be buying a fresh pair soon. The Salomon Sense Ride 4 is an aggressive trail running shoe that’s responsive and protective underfoot, with great grip, plus after a short break-in period, they fit my wider foot nicely.
If you’re looking for a competent shoe in rougher terrain, the Salomon Sense Ride 4 is an excellent choice.

In creating the Salomon Sense Ride 4, the company made a number of almost imperceptible tweaks to make this latest version much more versatile and closer to an all-around shoe, but still happiest in the mountains. The men’s advertised shoe weight is 10.2 ounces, while the women’s is 8.3 ounces. New models always bring about a risk of alienating your old customers by changing too much. However, Salomon has the balance just right with the SR4. Lightweight, versatile, and incredibly cushioned, the Sense Ride 4 is perfect for trails of any lengths and difficulty. However, you're never going to get the same level of protection required from a trail runner as you would a heavy-duty hiking shoe. Although they are often heavier and less agile, if you only need a hiking shoe, good options for you could be Nike Air Zoom Wildhorse 6 or Salomon S/Lab Ultra 3. But beware, there is a marginal increase in price with the Nike hiker, and the Salomon shoe is over double the price. I had the Sense Ride 3 but didn’t like them. They felt heavy, sluggish, and dull to me, and I ended up returning them after a couple runs. Looking for a new shoe for longer mountain runs and am trying to decide between this and the Cascadia. Any thoughts to help me decide? I tried on the new Salomon’s yesterday and they felt much lighter. I even had to size down ½ size than my normal Salomon Hoka size as they were running big on me. But any thoughts would be appreciated. What are your experiences with the Sense Ride line? Do you feel like this version is a big improvement?
