About this deal

Despite Frances solving a mystery with her friend Annie in the beginning, Annie is, confusingly, never mentioned afterwards. There are plenty of notes at the end for kids and parents (which I'm not usually a fan of in picture books; if you can't say what you needed to say in the main text, then maybe the book needs some work). Simultaneously it’s beautiful, filled with magic moments, which explore the creativity and imagination of children - the imagination adults seem to have lost in adulthood with all their boring tasks and chores and with meaningless hobbies.

This Methuen Drama edition features an introduction by James Grieve, who directed the play's first production. Dr Helen Johnson, Principal Lecturer in Psychology and Co-Director of the Centre for Arts and Wellbeing, University of Brighton. As I have often said to my own students, families come in many shapes and sizes, including those that we create as we move through life. Borrowed from the public library to test out for Nat'l poetry Month, will definitely be purchasing for our school library.I didn't see believable growth or development in the characters, and the verse format actually detracted from the story for me. The book immediately reminds the reader of Not Now, Bernard, in which we see a similarly fobbed-off child. is an addictive, deeply unsettling, and provocative novel of deception and betrayal, and passion turned to pain. I certainly wish we could clone him, and have one of him available at each and every school in our country! I appreciate and love what this book is trying to do, I just don't think it really gets to where I'd like it to.

But it was comforting that Frances and her sister, Clara, were confident in each other and friends by the end. I'm always amazed that so few words and so much white space can elicit such strong emotion and convey such a strong message. Overall this book tries too hard to break down the barriers around same sex families and the result is artificial and stiff and almost feels like it was written by someone who has no connection with the gay community even though I realise this is not the case here.I’m such a sucker for a book with an impactful ending, and Victoria Chang had just the right amount of sparkle in this one.

Brittany Hockley and Laura Byrne, former Bachelor finalists and hosts of the number-one podcast Life Uncut, have fumbled their way through it all. This is such a thought provoking book (the front and back endpapers alone are worth discussion) and it could be used with a KS2 audience as it evokes so many questions. I read this book as a digital book from Hoopla and enjoyed the magnifying feature that allowed you to zoom in on different parts of the text or illustrations. Sadly, I'd be fearful that parents of younger kids may cry indoctrination if this were in their student's room. Written in first person, it seems to be one character telling the story, but that character's appearance changes frequently. The illustrations are odd -- why is one child wearing winter clothing in the scene where they are flying kites? In a day and age when we tend to focus on our differences, Love is Love is here to remind us that the love of family is a shared value across cultures and family structures, and it gives our children the language they need explain that.
