About this deal

Harry is a great detective who has solved several big serial killer cases and is quite famous in Oslo for his successes. Once back in Oslo, Harry determines that the case — which involves trying to clear the name of a wealthy businessman who is suspected of murdering two women that went to one of his parties — might involve the work of a serial killer. That is until the woman who saved Harry’s life is put in grave danger, forcing Harry to join the chase for the serial killer. Finally, there’s a thread in this novel that strongly suggests a 14th book is on the way – here’s hoping it won’t take four years to materialise!

With this massive bill, Harry finds himself trying to see how he can help, if only to keep them alive. The killer in this book uses methods so horrible and heinous that it’s one of the few crime novels I’ve read that has literally turned my stomach. The book will be published in hardback, e-book and audiobook on 28th September 2023, with a UK author visit confirmed for publication.

I fear that my days of reading Jo Nesbo's books about the drunken, Norwegian detective, Harry Hole have come to an end. The camaraderie of this team is one of the most pleasing aspects of the book – a counter to Harry’s angst, grief and battle with alcoholism. I loved the cohort collected by Harry to assist him in solving the case: Stale Aune, Oystein and Truls. We follow Harry through upscale parties to homosexual clubs to the “brownest” of Oslo pubs as he hunts for the truth, interfering with police investigations. Ellis-Brown said: “ The Night House is a spine-chilling, suspenseful tale full of heart and humanity, and Jo’s passion for classic horror is evident on every page. When a classmate named Tom goes missing, the authorities suspect the new, angry boy is responsible for the disappearance.

If Harry achieves the task, the real estate magnate will award him a bonus enough to cover Lucille’s debt. There are parasite infestations (think The Last of Us), decapitations and, at one point, the anonymous perp eats a human brain. But the legendary Harry Hole is gone—fired from the force, drinking himself to oblivion in Los Angeles. In addition, shortly before they disappeared, Bertine and Susanne attended a party thrown by Røed - a party where liquor and cocaine flowed freely. Harvill Secker has snapped up The Night House, a “a twisted, multi-layered spin on the classic horror story” from Jo Nesbo.

Perhaps some are too obvious, perhaps not, but there is a good deal of misdirection which keeps the perpetrators identity hidden until just the crucial moment. I’ve been excited to read more in the Harry Hole series after recently reading The Snowman, and I absolutely loved this latest instalment! As the school bully, Richard is a somewhat unlikeable character, so I struggled to sympathize with him.
